In the heart of Redhill estate, among blocks of one-room rental flats, occupied mostly by seniors living alone. Therein lies a kopitiam serving delicious nasi padang by day, and authentic Peranakan food by night.
The staff, donning bright-blue shirts emblazoned with the words “Unconditional Love”, go about their work with a smile and greet customers like old pals.
But this is no ordinary kopitiam.
It’s a space of mission – to feed the poor and spread Christ’s love.
S17 Community Kitchen provides seniors and needy families with 500 meals through what its founder, Raymond Khoo, called – The Saturday Movement.
The Saturday Movement have served the Lengkok Bahru community for 11 years. Every week, volunteers from the Saturday Movement go from door-to-door offering bread and fruit to beneficiaries.
Raymond ran The Peranakan, an authentic Straits cuisine restaurant formerly located in the Orchard Road shopping district.
When Singapore entered partial lockdown at the height of the pandemic in April 2020, business at The Paranakan nosedived.
“In adversity we must step up, reach out and do more, to do good and give back in a tangible, meaningful way.”
Despite that, Raymond pushed on with the food distribution exercise, doubling down to provide 1000 lunches and dinners weekly, multiplying ‘loaves and fishes’ for the poor, and multiplying Christ’s love for the world.
Let us hear from Raymond – his story, inspiration, and testimony of Christ’s goodness, through the works the Lord is doing through him.
A STORY OF FEEDING THE POOR AND SPREADING CHRIST’S LOVE
About the Speaker
As a food and beverage businessman who brought in the Tong Shui franchise and runs his own lifestyle consultancy firm, Solutions 17, he would hire ex-convicts for the various restaurants he owned over the years, starting with Bay View Club, a Western-style establishment he ran in Malaysia. Having opened restaurants in French, Indian, and Spanish cuisine during his 30 years in F&B, and after some years working in Macau, he opened the much-lauded restaurant, The Peranakan on Singapore’s Orchard Road in 2016, and continued hiring former inmates, wives of current inmates and unemployed middle-aged people who were struggling to find a job.
He is also the Founder of Saturdays@Lengkok Bahru, a ground-up initiative that takes care of the poorer households living in one-room rental units in Lengkok Bahru (1,200 households in total). An early start in doing good has given Raymond the heart and smarts in putting together sustainable community projects. He grew up packing and delivering food parcels for prisoners with his late grandfather, who was Singapore’s first prison chaplain.
